A Broken Switch

My autoleveller broke... but I wanted to go full manual anyways so I jury rigged a faulty z axis switch to work correctly 😅 #3dprinting #glassbed

I finally got around to operating my 3D printer for the first time at the new studio. It takes quite a bit of time to re-calibrate the printer after it has been transported Unfortunately, this was when I found out my auto-leveler was broken … the switch wouldn’t trigger when the extruder hit the bed. Luckily, I stopped everything before the printer suffered damages.

The auto-switch was burnt out, but I had a backup mechanical switch that I could replace it with. It was, however, wired incorrectly and I didn’t have a soldering iron to fix it … so … I tore the wires off, skinned their covers, and braided it around the switch in the correct manner. When I get my hands on my soldering iron, I’ll burn the wires into place permanently.

I also purchased a glass bed for my 3D printer and after 4 trials, I gave up trying to print with ABS filament. It refused to stick to the glass. I pulled out my blue PETG filament and the printer was much more compliant.

I do enjoy the glass bed. It is quicker to prep up – just an even coat of hairspray and I just clip it on to the heated bed. Also, it’s much easier to wash and clean.

I was hoping to print the full model but the filament kinked up 20% of the way through and no filament extruded for nearly an hour … so I dug through the g-code to see about where the extruder stopped working and ran the code from the appropriate line. Unfortunately, I used a candle to level the layers and wax dripped onto the bed. Eventually, the escaped wax caused the model to lift from the bed and freed the model. I barely had 50% of the tambourine printed when the model no longer stuck to the bed.

I made do.

I used fishing line to tie bells to the frame and ta da! Here’s a tambourine for Yua!
